Shift allowance calculator
Shift allowance is the premium for a roster that is not a plain day shift. Night shift allowance is one kind. A general-shift premium, a rotating-shift premium, and a weekend premium are others. This page is the shift allowance calculator’s map: which box to fill, and which phrase — night salary, night shift pay rate, night rate pay — you actually have.
Check your HR policy. Common structures are a percent of daily CTC, a fixed amount per shift, or an hourly night rate. The tools do not invent a rate. You type the one on the letter.
Three different questions
| What you searched | What it usually means | Where to calculate it |
|---|---|---|
| Shift allowance, or night shift allowance | A premium per shift, either a percent of daily CTC or a fixed rupee amount | Night calculator |
| Night salary | Often the whole month’s cash for night work: base pay plus the premium. Sometimes people mean only the premium. | Premium on the night calculator. Base pay is the salary already on the letter, not a second allowance. |
| Night shift pay rate, night rate pay | A price per hour, sometimes with an extra percent or extra rupees on hours inside a night window | Hours and differential calculator |
Mixing the rows double-counts. If payroll pays ₹800 on top of a monthly salary, do not also multiply an hourly wage by the same nights. If payroll pays you only by the hour, the hourly total is the night salary, and a percent of CTC would invent a second pay packet.
Percent of daily CTC
Daily CTC = annual CTC ÷ working days. The calculator’s default is 240. Per shift = daily CTC × the percent on the letter. A full worked table, including 20%, 25%, and 30% on ₹12,00,000, is in how to calculate night shift allowance. One line here, so this page stays about the choice of rate rather than repeating that table: ₹12,00,000 ÷ 240 = ₹5,000, and 25% is ₹1,250 a night.
Use this mode when the annexure says the allowance is a percentage. Open Customise days & % if the letter’s day count is not 240.
Fixed amount per shift
Use this when the letter says rupees per night or per shift and never mentions a percent. Sample only, not a policy: ₹650 a shift × 18 shifts = ₹11,700. Type 650 and 18 on the fixed mode of the calculator.
Two rates on one roster
Rotating rosters often pay one figure for a weekday night and another for a weekend night. The calculator stores one rate. Split the month:
| Line | Rate on the letter (sample) | Shifts | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekday night | ₹600 | 16 | ₹9,600 |
| Weekend night | ₹1,000 | 6 | ₹6,000 |
| Shift allowance this month | 22 | ₹15,600 |
₹600 and ₹1,000 are stand-ins so the addition is visible. Replace them with the two numbers in your circular. A general-shift allowance on the day weeks of a rotation is a third line, added the same way, only for the shifts that earn it.
Night shift pay rate, when you are paid by the hour
Night rate pay is an hourly price. Sample only: ordinary wage ₹200 an hour, and a 10% differential on night hours. The 10% is a number you can edit. It is not a law. A 22:00–06:00 shift with no break is 8 hours, all of them inside a 22:00–06:00 window.
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | 22:00 to 06:00 crosses midnight | 8 h |
| Night rate | ₹200 × 1.10 | ₹220 / h |
| This shift | 8 × 220 | ₹1,760 |
| Of which the differential | 8 × ₹20 | ₹160 |
₹1,760 is the pay for that shift, wages included. ₹160 is the night premium alone. If someone asks for “night salary,” ask which of those two they mean before you multiply by the nights in the month. Ten identical shifts would be ₹17,600 of shift pay, of which ₹1,600 is differential. A 30-minute break, and a window that does not cover the whole shift, change the hours. That version is on the hours calculator: 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours, and a break is spread across the shift because the form does not ask when you took it.
Night salary, said plainly
For a salaried CTC, night salary in the bank is closer to in-hand pay plus whatever allowance is paid on top, minus tax on the component. The allowance calculator answers the premium. The In-hand tab on the homepage is a separate, simplified tax estimate. Do not add the allowance on top of in-hand if the annexure already folded it into CTC. Read the line. If “shift allowance” sits inside the CTC breakup, you have identified the component. You have not found new cash.
For an hourly contract, night salary is the night rate times the hours. There may be no CTC percent to apply.
Company names
Searching “TCS night shift allowance” or “Sagility night shift allowance” does not publish a rate. Check your HR policy, then come back with a percent or a rupee amount. Notes on what to look for, without invented figures: TCS and Sagility. Structures common in Indian IT letters are described in night shift allowance in Indian IT companies.
Questions
What is a shift allowance calculator actually calculating?
The premium for working a shift, not your whole salary, unless your letter pays you by the hour. A percent of daily CTC or a fixed rupee amount per shift belongs on the night calculator. An hourly night rate belongs on the hours calculator.
What is night salary versus a night shift pay rate?
Night salary usually means the month’s cash for a night roster: base pay plus any allowance. A night shift pay rate, or night rate pay, is the price of one hour or one night. Add the premium to base pay only if the letter says the rate is on top.
Can one rate cover weekday and weekend shifts?
Only if the letter uses one rate. If weekends pay a different rupee amount, calculate each line and add them. The free calculator holds one rate per run.
