How the hours are counted
Subtract the start clock from the end clock. When the end is earlier than the start, add 24 hours first. That is the whole fix for a graveyard shift:
- 22:00 to 06:00 → 8 hours, all of them inside a 22:00–06:00 night window.
- 20:00 to 05:00 → 9 hours. With that same window, 20:00–22:00 is ordinary time (2 hours) and 22:00–05:00 is night (7 hours).
- 09:00 to 17:00 → 8 hours, none of them inside 22:00–06:00.
- 22:00 to 22:00 → 0 hours. A full day is not inferred from a repeated clock time.
Break minutes come off the total and are spread in proportion between night and day. A 30-minute break on an all-night 8-hour shift leaves 7.5 night hours. If the break was actually taken in the daytime portion, your payslip can differ by that slice — the form does not ask when you ate.

Swap 10% for the number in your appointment letter, or switch to a fixed rupee extra per night hour. If the company pays a lump per night rather than per hour, use the allowance calculator instead: (annual CTC ÷ working days) × allowance %, or the fixed ₹ per night.
What this does not decide
India does not publish one national night-differential percentage for private salaries. Some workplaces fall under the Factories Act, others under a state Shops and Establishments Act; those laws deal with hours, weekly rest, and overtime in different ways. None of them is hard-coded here. The rate payroll will use is the one on the offer letter or the HR circular. Overtime (extra hours beyond a daily or weekly limit) is a different payment from a night differential, and this page models only one wage plus an optional night premium.

How do I calculate night shift hours that cross midnight?
If the end time is earlier on the clock than the start, the shift ends the next morning. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. The same start and end is 0 hours, not 24.
What is night differential pay?
Extra pay for hours inside the night window, on top of the ordinary hourly wage. Type a percent or a rupee amount per night hour. The 10% sample is not a rule.
Is there a standard night allowance percentage in India?
No single nationwide percentage. Companies often pay a slice of daily CTC or a fixed amount per night. Confirm the figure with HR before you treat a result as pay.
Does a share link upload my wage?
